I can’t tell you how old I was when I saw my first therapist, but I do know one thing, I did not like her. How was I meant to open up about the most private, sacred parts of myself to a complete stranger? To sit still and talk about feelings was not something I was interested in, back then.

Yoga was my first real therapist

Yoga taught me how to breathe. How to move through trauma. How to feel and sit with difficult emotions. How to better embody love. Yoga taught me the power of presence. Yoga taught me a way of being. It taught me how to reconnect to my inner world. Yoga taught me how to live in reverence of the earth and her sacred elements. With yoga as my guide, I learned how to fall (hard) and get back up. I learned how to see the lessons in loss, and the successes hidden in failure. I studied holistic nutrition. reiki. mindfulness. stoic philosophy, and social work. I soaked up all that I could from teachers, nature, mentors and wise ones.  I learned that in times of stillness we can find a way home to ourselves. I also eventually found my human therapist. And when I sat across from this woman who witnessed my rainbow of emotions in a way that felt safe and exciting, I finally felt seen and free to explore within.

Throughout my life anxiety has manifested in many crippling ways - walking me down dark alleys of self-sabotage, in and out of codependent relationships, and far away from my truth. No matter how hard I tried to distract, numb, and avoid - there it was. One day I woke up and it became crystal clear - my life experiences were and are profound initiations - and so are yours. Your willingness to experience your life fully, to explore your shadows, relational attachments, challenges and triggers, to courageously face your limiting beliefs holds the key to your freedom and healing.

I know life can be daunting and painful at times. I know that stumbling towards your truth is both terrifying and exhilarating. and I know that the only way out, is through.

Thank you for reading my story. I am here when you’re ready to share yours.

With love,

Kaitlyn
